Lord Sainsbury Candover KG

Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover KG has been President of J Sainsbury plc since 1992, having joined Sainsbury's in 1950. He became a Director in 1958, Vice-Chairman in 1967 and Chairman and Chief Executive in 1969. Lord Sainsbury has pursued a wide range of interests outside his main business career. He was Chairman of the Royal Opera House between 1987 and 1991, and has been a director of the Economist, a Trustee of the National Gallery and a Trustee of the Tate Gallery.Lord Sainsbury has pursued a wide range of interests outside his main business career. He has been Visitor of the Ashmolean Museum since 2003, and Patron of Dulwich Picture Gallery since 2004. With his wife Anya Linden, he established the Linbury Trust as his charitable foundation over 30 years ago.

Lord Sainsbury was knighted in 1980, made a life peer in 1989 and was made a Knight of the Garter in 1992. He sits on the Conservative benches in the House of Lords, and has served on the Joint Scrutiny Committee on the Charities Bill.
