Too often government has become synonymous with inefficiency and poor value for money. Although this has never been acceptable, the deficit crisis makes it even less so. However, there is an enterprise that produces social benefits and, in an economic sense, does not just break even but would give the Government around a 20:1 return on investment.  Surely that should be a model to consider reproducing.

The hidden debt

The true level of government debt is not £805 billion as currently reported by the ONS but £2,200 billion (i.e. £85,610 per household), demonstrates Brooks Newmark MP in The Hidden Debt Bombshell  published today by the Centre for Policy Studies.

 

At the end of August 2009, the UK's Public Sector Net Debt (including financial interventions) was £805 billion. This is equivalent to £31,320 for every home in the country, or 57.5%...
