Regulating against volunteering

Written by Lucy Gilchrist Tuesday, 20 October 2009 14:41

A colleague and I have been participating in a 'reading in schools' programme for the past few years, in a bid to give something back to the local community.  Prior to my fortnightly trip to the school yesterday I discovered I am suddenly not allowed to attend until I update my Criminal Records Bureau form.  The rationale for this is seemingly because it is three years old.  This strikes me as somewhat bizarre...

Watching the long queues forming in the US last November, I was in awe.  In awe not just at witnessing history, not just because America was on the cusp of electing its...

A Union worth defending

Written by Lucy Gilchrist Thursday, 14 May 2009 14:18

Ten years on from devolution and with opinion poll ratings up by half, Annabel Goldie today asks the Scottish people to judge the Conservative and Unionist Party not on past perceptions but on current reality.

The financial crisis has illustrated the Labour Party's incompetence and, in turn, the SNP's inability to act on it.  Therein lies an opportunity for the Conservatives to become the new party of choice north of the...
