The Going for Growth Lecture Series

Thursday 10th October 2019 – Tuesday 10th December 2019

It is the greatest economic question we face: how do we turn today's stagnant growth rates into a solid and sustained economic expansion?

In a new CPS lecture series, 'Going for Growth', leading economic thinkers will set out their thoughts in the company of some of Britain's most respected financial commentators.

    Thursday 10th October 2019:

Dr Dambisa Moyo, Author and EconomistDr Dambisa Moyo, Author and Economist

For the first in the series, respected author Dr Dambisa Moyo will speak on "Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth - and How to Fix it."

Dr. Moyo will discuss the new political and economic challenges facing the world, and the specific, radical solutions needed to resolve these issues and reignite global growth.

Dr. Moyo is an economist and the author of four New York Times bestsellers including her most recent, Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth.

The evening will be chaired by Jeremy Warner, the assistant editor of The Daily Telegraph, and one of Britain's leading business and economics commentators.

    Tuesday 19th November 2019:

In the second part of this series, the celebrated entrepreneur and commentator John Mills will discuss the problem of stagnating growth, and how it can be fixed.

Speaking on Challenging the Consensus - How To Get the UK Growing at 3.5% Per Annum Like The Rest of The World, John will offer a quantitative and evidence-based strategy to overcome slow growth. John argues that we must raise our ambitions on growth, blaming our poor economic record on an economy that is too heavily weighted towards services. The best way around this, John argues, is to use market incentives to drive up investment in our industrial heartlands.

After John's remarks, Liam Halligan, the star economics columnist at The Sunday Telegraph, will discuss these arguments in further detail with John before chairing a Q&A session with the audience.

    Tuesday 10th December 2019:

Dr Gerard Lyons will be presenting the third lecture in our series. Lyons is an economist and Chief Economic Strategist at Netwealth Investments, having previously served as Chief Economic Adviser to Boris Johnson while he was Mayor of London. He was Co-Founder of Economists for Brexit and is co-author of Clean Brexit (Biteback Publishing).

Chris Giles, Economics Editor at the Financial Times will be chairing this evening. Followig the conclusion of the lecture, Dr Lyons and Giles will discuss the arguments made in further detail before a Q&A session with the audience.
